2006 My Choice: Pan’s Labyrinth

How this won always will be a mystery to me. Wong Kar Wai was the President of the Jury that year, now I get the poster! Other Films in competition were Babel, Pan’s Labyrinth, Marie Antoinette, Red Road & Volver

I found a more than worthy winner and vastly superior to all of the above (especially Babel, Pan’s and Marie Antoinette) though I enjoyed Volver primarily for Cruz’s performance. Of your list, Red Road is Barley’s only real competition.

Like Ida B. Wells-Barnett, my experience as a Black woman in the academy has been that my choice to be committed to supporting my Black husband and raising Black children has been interpreted as a “divided duty,” more than 100 years after Wells-Barnett blazed the trail. I entered the tenure-track 15 years ago when I was five months pregnant. I have taken three parental leaves, which were all met with resentment. This is not unusual, but what I am confident of is that if I had chosen to stay home, I would have faced as much hostility, if not more. America is comfortable with Black women raising white children (TheHelp, To Kill A Mockingbird, Clara’s Heart, I’ll Fly Away…need I go on?), but the minute we try to take care of our own, we’re reduced to “letting down the team,” which is what white feminist Linda Hirshman is claiming about Lady “O.” I’m confused. Just because I have five letters behind my name (Ph.D. and JD) and a substantive career does not mean I am, ever have been, or ever will be on their team.

As we got up from our seats and stood in place to enter the aisle, the white woman behind me stood next to me in the aisle and was determined to gain the place in the line ahead of me. Elisabeth was standing by her seat in the row beside me, and the woman’s husband was standing behind us in the aisle.

We stood a long time, as it seemed to take longer than usual for the passengers ahead of us to file out of the passengers’ cabin. When it became closer for our row to exit, the elderly woman beside me started walking ahead and somehow got three rows in front of us. I am not sure how she managed that, but she did, leaving her husband behind us. So far, we have simple rudeness.

As she left the plane, she was about eighteen passengers ahead of me on the ramp. So, when it was my turn to walk out, I asked her husband if he wanted to go ahead of us, and he politely said, “Please go ahead.” So, my daughter and I stepped from the passenger cabin.

As we passed the elderly woman on the terminal ramp, she had an angry look on her face as my daughter and I emerged from the door ahead of her husband. She was waiting for her husband in disgust. Her displeasure was written on her face, and as we walked past her, she said aloud to her husband, “I can’t believe you allowed the Chinese to get ahead of you!”

She said it loud enough so that I could hear. As the words left her mouth, her spitefully-based statement to her husband angered me more than such events may warrant. My first thought was the perception that an Asian is always already viewed as a foreigner no matter how long they have been living in this country. Even fourth or fifth generation Asians are viewed as the “perpetual foreigner.” Asian Americans have been depicted as “perpetual foreigners,” “unassimilatable,” and other stereotypes that reveal historic and persistent racism experienced by this racial/ethnic group. For example, almost every Asian in America has been afflicted with the perpetual foreigner syndrome. Many have been asked, “Where are you really from?” This loaded question, which I shall call the “really-question,” differs from the usual one, “Where are you from?” The really question figuratively and literally ejects the Asian American respondent to Asia, because the assumption behind the question, even if the questioner is oblivious to it, is that Asian Americans cannot be “real” Americans.

A protest was held today in support of Rehtaeh Parsons, the Halifax girl who recently committed suicide after being bullied incessantly due to photos that circulated of her being raped by four boys. You’ve seen it on the news, I’m sure.

It’s a horrible tragedy, and on top of it, a counter-protest was staged today in support of the boys accused of raping her.

Not upsetting enough? Have a look at the Facebook page (Speak The Truth) set up in support of the accused rapists… By a girl.

Don’t believe in rape culture? Read the Facebook group, wherein one guy accuses Rehtaeh of being a coward who killed herself because she “made a drunken mistake.” Yeah. Because being raped is a mistake, like forgetting bus change or picking up the wrong kind of milk. Right?

Wrong. There’s a lot I could say on this topic, but look for yourself…

makes me sick to my stomach. ”don’t know the truth”? Screw you kids, we KNOW the truth. A girl killed herself after four boys brutally raped her, laughed about it, and circulated the pictures like it was funny.

Anyone who can’t see the injustice there can roast in the balmy fires of hell.
